Checklist

Questions to bring to your doctor about sleep

Appointments are short, and sleep problems are easy to describe vaguely. This checklist helps you gather the facts a clinician will probably want and lists questions you might ask. It is for preparing a conversation, not for working out what is wrong with you.

1. Before the visit: what to write down
2. Questions you might ask
3. At the end of the visit

Why prepare

A clinician usually asks about your sleep schedule, how long problems have lasted, your daytime function, your medicines and your habits. Having these ready makes a short visit more useful. The question list is a starting point: cross out what does not apply and add your own. Asking how a recommendation fits your situation is always fair.

Signs it is worth booking soon

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute advises talking to a doctor if healthy habits do not help, for example if you cannot stay awake in the day or struggle with shift-work hours. Loud snoring with pauses in breathing is also commonly raised with clinicians; see common signs of sleep apnea for general background. This site cannot tell you whether any of these apply to you.

What this page does not do

It does not suggest treatments, doses or medicines, and it does not tell you what a clinician will conclude. Do not start, stop or change any medicine because of something on this page. If you take sleep medicine now, talk to the prescriber before changing anything.

Where this comes from

The advice on when to seek medical help follows National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute guidance on healthy sleep habits (read October 2026), and the list of items to note, such as schedule, medicines, habits and daytime function, reflects the usual content of a sleep history. The questions themselves are general prompts written for this page, not clinical guidance or a quotation from any body.
